On a construction site, a machine that is not running is a machine that is costing you money. Operator wages, project deadlines, and rental of a stand-in unit all add up the moment an excavator goes down. The good news: most breakdowns are preventable with a routine that takes minutes a day. Here is the maintenance checklist we share with every Kobelco and Escorts Kubota owner we work with.
Daily checks (before the first start)
- Walk around the machine and look for leaks, loose bolts, and damage.
- Check engine oil, coolant, and hydraulic fluid levels.
- Inspect the undercarriage and tracks for packed mud, stones, and tension.
- Grease the boom, arm, and bucket pins as per the operator manual.
- Test lights, horn, alarms, and safety devices.
Weekly checks
- Clean or replace the air filter, especially during the dusty dry season common across Maharashtra sites.
- Check battery terminals and electrical connections.
- Inspect hoses and fittings for wear or seepage.
- Look over the bucket teeth and cutting edges and replace before they fail.
Periodic service (by running hours)
This is where the OEM schedule matters. Engine oil and filter changes, hydraulic oil and filter service, and fuel filter replacement are all tied to running hours, not the calendar. Skipping them to keep a machine on the job is the single most expensive mistake owners make, because it shortens the life of components that cost lakhs to replace.
The most common causes of avoidable breakdowns
- Dirty filters: Dust starves the engine and contaminates hydraulics.
- Neglected undercarriage: The undercarriage is up to half the lifetime maintenance cost of a tracked machine; loose or worn tracks accelerate the damage.
- Old or wrong fluids: Using off-spec oil voids protection and warranty.
- Ignoring small leaks: A weeping seal today is a hydraulic failure next month.
When to bring in a service partner
Daily and weekly checks are yours to own. Periodic service, diagnostics, and anything under warranty are best handled by OEM-trained technicians with genuine parts. That is exactly what our Annual Maintenance Contracts cover: scheduled service to the OEM standard, priority breakdown support, and fixed, predictable costs so a surprise repair never blows your budget.
