A well-chosen used excavator can be a smart way to add capacity without a new-machine price tag, but only if you inspect it properly. The difference between a bargain and a money pit is what you check before you pay. Use this checklist before buying any second-hand excavator in India.

1. Service history and running hours

Ask for the service records and the hour-meter reading. Low hours mean little if the machine was never serviced; a higher-hour machine with a complete OEM service history is often the safer buy.

2. Undercarriage

The undercarriage is one of the most expensive parts of a tracked machine to replace. Check track tension, wear on the chains, rollers, idlers, and sprockets, and look for uneven wear that hints at neglect.

3. Hydraulics and leaks

Inspect cylinders, hoses, and fittings for leaks and seepage. Work every function and watch for slow, jerky, or weak movement, which points to pump or valve wear.

4. Engine

Start it cold if you can. Watch the exhaust: heavy blue or black smoke signals trouble. Listen for knocking and check for oil or coolant contamination.

5. Structure and welds

Examine the boom, arm, and chassis for cracks, bent sections, and amateur weld repairs, which often hide past damage or overloading.

6. Attachments and pins

Check bucket teeth, cutting edges, and pin and bush wear. Excessive play means parts you will replace soon.

7. Documents and ownership

Confirm clear ownership, that any finance is closed, and that the paperwork matches the machine. This protects you legally and at resale.

8. Test it under load

A short demo proves little. Dig, lift, and travel under realistic conditions before you commit.
